Red for Summers

Summer is perhaps the season that feels most challenged by red. Your softer pinks can feel much safer than going for bold vibrant red, but as long as you choose the right tones, you can take it pretty far into red territory without losing your cool and soft Summer look.

When identifying your reds, the first point to consider is that the cooler the better. You don't want anything orangey. You also want to look for slightly softened versions like Cranberry and Garnet, or pinkier reds which keep it dialled back a touch from full on holly berry - Cherry Red, Beaujolais and Musk Red all fit the bill.

Of course, it's easy to shop for your best reds with Kettlewell; you can either browse all of the Summer colours, or use the website filters to narrow down the items you can view by colour (Red) and seasonal palette (Summer), to show you all the variations on the theme that will work for you.

The other key point to remember is that wearing your reds in a more tonal way will keep them feeling softer and less 'out there' for your palette. Try pairing varying shades of reds, burgundies and pinks together, or for an even easier look, pair your red with neutrals of similar depth (such as darker greys and blues) to avoid too much contrast within your outfit. That said, if you're feeling bold, don't be afraid to wear your best reds as a bold block of colour if you want to! The rules are there to be broken, after all.

Style notes: Up the volume of your entire outfit by pairing bold Cherry with deep wine shades - who said Summer had to be quiet and subtle? All of these shades work together to create a tonal look, which keeps it Summer-appropriate without sacrificing impact.
