Stylist edit - essential pieces from the new collection

As lead stylist at Kettlewell, each season I pick a few key favourites from the new collection. Often I identify a clear favourite right at the beginning of the design process, but occasionally I surprise myself, and the pieces I’ve ignored throughout the design process become immediate favourites when they arrive at Kettlewell HQ at the start of the season.

This season is no exception, and my essential edit of the season is filled with both old favourites and new surprises – but I can’t wait to get each one of them into my wardrobe and enjoy an AW23 filled with colour, confidence and style!

The outfits below all feature Autumn palette colours, as that’s the palette which best suits my colouring (and I love the most!). Of course, each outfit can be translated to other seasons, and we’ve included some of our favourite images to inspire you. If you’re not sure which seasonal palette is right for you, head over to our clever Colour Quiz to begin your colour journey and build a wardrobe you love!

Cashmerino Stripe

The Cashmerino stripe was one of those pieces that I largely ignored during the design process. I’d seen a fabric sample, which I knew was lovely, but I wasn’t immediately grabbed by the combination of brown and coral of the Autumn colourway, being more generally a teal and mustard fan. But when the knitwear delivery arrived I instantly gravitated towards the sumptuous fabric and rich shades of this indulgent cashmerino piece, and knew it would find a home in my wardrobe.

Cappuccino Cashmerino Stripe | Copper Classic Metallic Belt | jeans

Style notes: I’ll be styling this one really simply, with wide leg jeans and one of our new Copper Classic Metallic belts, for brunch with friends, or with a slim pencil skirt for work.

Silky Roll Neck

I more or less live in Silky Roll Necks from about October through to May, and usually I wouldn’t include such a wardrobe staple in my new season edit, but this year I am just so excited to add the unusual Autumn shade Heliotrope to my wardrobe that it feels like a core part of my edit!

Heliotrope Silky Roll Neck | True Teal Short Ponte Skirt | Almond Cream Marta Wrap

Style notes: I’ll be pairing it my Heliotrope Silky Roll Neck with Laguna and True Teal, but also with warmer Autumn shades like Amber and Ochre to keep my look golden warm.

Jersey Maxi Skirt

My first ever purchase from Kettlewell well over a decade ago was a Chocolate Jersey Maxi Skirt, and I’ve always had a soft spot for this longstanding Kettlewell favourite. Swishy but sleek, it pairs equally happy with neater tops like the Silkies or Connie Sweater, and more voluminous pieces like the Evie Sweater.

Grey Teal Jersey Maxi Skirt | Coral Connie Sweater | Soft White Silky Scoop Neck

Style notes: I’ll be adding a Grey Teal Maxi Skirt to my wardrobe, which I’ll be pairing with chunky brown boots and a Connie Sweater, although I’ll also style it more smartly for with the addition of a shirt or even a blazer with the sleeves pushed up.

Lambswool Coatigan

Another piece that somehow managed to fly under my radar until about a week before our first AW shoot! But the Albany Coatigan has definitely made up for its late entry into my edit, with gorgeous rich shades and a softness that is usually more associated with merino than lambswool, and I can’t wait to cosy up in this longline snuggly wrap both at work and at home.

Deep Teal Albany Coatigan | Mustard & Cream Stripey Pima Tee | jeans | Nile Blue Classic Leather Belt

Style notes: I’ll be pairing my Albany Lambswool Coatigan with slim jeans or even leggings, and longline layers like my beloved Stripey Pima Tees.

Longline Scoop

The perfect top for taller people (or those, like me, blessed with an extraordinarily long body and correspondingly short legs), with just a little more structure to it than our other longline customer favourites, the Silky range. Melissa and I have been campaigning for the return of this piece ever since we first created it back in 2018, and we’ve finally got our wish!

Persimmon Longline Scoop | Olive Jungle Ophelia Wrap Dress | Gold Dazzle Necklace

Style notes: I’ll be wearing mine under my Albany Coatigan with the sleeves peeking out at the cuffs, or under my Ophelia Wrap Dress as an extra colour splash. There is a 100% I’ll be opting for the Persimmon colour here!

Chelsea Blazer

Another favourite, in a new and exciting colour! The Chelsea Blazer offers the perfect blend of chic tailoring with relaxed texture, and I have lived in my Stone version all summer. This AW I’ll be adding the Dark Moss version to my wardrobe. With its slight stretch, this blazer even works over knitwear like our Connie or Cashmerino Stripe for cosy wintertime outfits that don’t sacrifice smartness.

Dark Moss Chelsea Blazer | Dark Olive Lauren Trousers | Cream Hetta Pima Tee | Amber Inga Cowl Scarf

Style notes: I’ll be pairing my Chelsea Blazer with everything from slim leg work trousers to my Dark Olive Jersey Maxi Skirt, but it also makes the perfect laid back travel outfit when paired with tonal Dark Olive Lauren Trousers and a Hetta Pima Tee.

I echo both Barbara and Michelle’s comments regarding the length of tops. As a petite with a short body and long legs I really struggle with this and have had to send several items back as they’re just too long 🙁I appreciate tops can be tucked in but unless that suits your CP / style it’s really difficult to make the KW tops work.

Barbara on Sep 10, 2023 10:50 AM

Like Michelle Mitchell, I too have a very short body. Petite in general but my body is the shortest segment of my overall height (neck to waist 14 inches). All tops are too long but any that are especially good for tall people are completely out of the question.

I also ask please can you do some top half basics in a short length.

Thank you.

I'm glad that you long bodied ladies have KW options, but when are you going to start catering for those of us with the reverse problem?

As someone with an extraordinarily short body with correspondingly long legs, I struggle with all of your tops.

Please, please, please can you do some basics in a 'shortline' for those of us needing a petite fit on our top halves?

Really helpful guidance - especially re work and home use of items plus layering ... all to optimise the usefulness and fun to be gained from each! Can't wait to have a play around. Thankyou.
