Red for Autumns

While Red might not feel like an obvious bedfellow for Autumn, once you start to call it Rust or Brick, suddenly it feels right at home. Your reds all have a definite warm tone - an orangey warmth, a hint of the bonfire of autumn - and vary from moderately clear through to the softest shades that almost veer into brown or pink.

When identifying your reds, the first and most important thing to look for is warmth. You want that tomato, warm undertone in all your reds. When it comes to softness, go with your own preference, but softened versions like Rust and Brick Red are guaranteed winners - the more Clear your colour dominant, the easier the more vibrant shades like Geranium and Poppy are, but they can feel a little intimidating for your first forays into Red.

Of course, it's easy to shop for your best reds with Kettlewell; you can either browse all of the Autumn colours, or use the website filters to narrow down the items you can view by colour (Red) and seasonal palette (Autumn), to show you all the variations on the theme that will work for you.

The other key point to remember is that wearing your reds in a more tonal way will keep them feeling softer and less 'out there' for your palette. Try pairing red with browns or Autumn's pinks for a tonal look, or for an even easier look, pair your red with neutrals of similar depth (such as Chocolate or Laguna) to avoid too much contrast within your outfit. That said, if you're feeling bold, don't be afraid to wear your best reds as a bold block of colour if you want to! The rules are there to be broken, after all.

Style notes: The bold but not overwhelming Brick Red of the Florence Infinity lifts this otherwise neutral outfit, making the whole outfit perfect for a laid back festive family get together.

Style notes:

True Red and Teal might feel like an awful lot of colour, but this outfit works because all of the tones are relatively deep - although we've combined two relatively bright colours, we haven't also brought in a light colour, which would add even more contrast. Think of it as 'tonal brights'!
