Grey and Yellow for Summers
When I think of the main colour ‘groups’ for Summers, Grey is definitely near the top of the list (the other ones that spring instantly to mind are Pinks, Purples, and Blues, although obviously there are countless other shades available to this soft, cool season). You were designed to wear Grey, Summers.
Your version of Grey can be almost anything from charcoal and mole to palest silver, but you really glow in greys which have a definite blueish undertone – think of slate, snowy mountains and cloudy skies. This means that although you can wear Pantone’s Ultimate Grey, your best version might have a touch more blue to it. Your grey can form the centrepiece of your outfit, or the basis of a tonal look. But as long as your grey doesn’t get too dark (off-black can be too heavy for you) or have any warmth (yellow undertone), it’s almost certain to work for you. When it comes to Illuminating, it’s a little trickier, as yellow isn’t a natural part of your palette, but cool down and soften that yellow even more and you’ll arrive at Primrose, your perfect (and indeed only) Yellow!
Your greys can form the bulk of your outfit, or more of an anchor to create a beautiful tonal, textured and colourful look, giving your Summer colours a firmly neutral basis. I’ve shown two outfits below, showing the versatility of grey in your wardrobe.
Style notes: This outfit keeps to a super-minimal colour palette, with just a hint of teal adding to the neutral backdrop – even the Indian Teal feels more neutral than colourful, This creates overall effortless and slimming look (the column of French Grey keeps the silhouette long and lean), while the tiny splash of colour from the Heart Earrings adds a delicate and barely-there colour pop.
Style notes: Mix your greys – from Slate to Pebble, add a good dose of silver and finish it off with a pop of light freshness in the shape of Primrose.
And what about hair colour?
If you want to embrace grey when it comes to hair colour, very often letting your hair do what it does naturally is the easiest solution – Summer hair will generally remain very cool toned as it goes grey. Modern blue toned shampoos are a world away from old fashioned ‘blue’ grey hair, and add coolness back in if you feel your hair colour leans a little too warm as it goes grey.
