How to care for your suede
Like cashmere and silk, suede feels like an indulgent investment when you stroke its rich, fuzzy handle.
Suede is created by buffing the surface of the hide to give a soft, velvety finish after removing the outer layer. This means suede is more delicate than full leather and needs a more considered approach to care and cleaning to ensure it retains its softness , suppleness and colour.
The tactile, fuzzy texture that makes suede so appealing is down to its nap, the velvet-like fibres that characterise the underside of a hide. In contrast to smooth, full-grain leather, this makes it more susceptible to trapping dirt and dust, but you can help your suede stay looking fresh by using a brush on it from time to time.
Opt for a natural or silicone-bristled suede brush and steer clear of more abrasive tools. Regular brushing will help to keep your suede free from dust and soft to the touch.
When brushing, stroke gently in the direction of the nap to maintain a smooth, uniform look. The same technique can also be used to revive suede footwear.
Kettlewell Colours recommends also using a good quality suede protector spray, which will help protect the suede against water staining and will also help reduce colour transfer. This should be applied following the instructions for the spray , usually a light coating, leaving it to dry for approximately half an hour before a 2nd coating of the spray. This process should be repeated annually.
Spray-coating, brushing and keeping your suede safely tucked up indoors on rainy days is a good start, but after months of wear, you might find your jacket is looking a little grubby around the edges. This is because the natural protective oils in the skin will dry out over time and it might have become soiled with wear. Take it to a dry cleaner with a good knowledge of dealing with leather and suede garments once a year.
- This product is made from high quality natural skins, and some slight imperfections in the surface are to be expected. Please note that due to the tanning process, and the individual nature of the skins used, there may be some very slight, tonal variation of colour within the garment.
- The lining of the jacket may appear to be slightly large when first worn, as this is to allow the jacket outer to grow / stretch over time and wear, and will prolong the life of this product.
