Designed for longevity

There’s been a lot in the press lately about the move away from fast fashion towards better-quality pieces that are kind to the planet and have a long life ahead of them. It’s a hot topic and one that’s close to my heart. Kettlewell works with small family-run factories in Portugal and Turkey that care for their employees and produce clothing using ethical and environmentally friendly practices. Their standards are as exacting as ours and together we strive to produce high-quality, long-lasting clothes that you’d be proud to hang in your wardrobe – pieces that won’t go out of shape after you’ve worn them once, or that lose their colour after a couple of washes. Each season, John and I visit the factories to check that every seam and button in the new collection is straight, every label correctly stitched, every fabric the best it can be.

It’s important to us that our products are sustainable and ethical at the point of production in terms of the fabrics we use and the conditions for employees at our factories, but also that they are sustainable in that they don’t need to be replaced after just a handful of wears. We consider any potential addition to Kettlewell, whether it’s a new fabric or a whole new factory, on its own merits, and hold each one up to our own personal ethical, environmental and quality standards before moving forwards with it.

It gives our customers the confidence to buy a style knowing the production process hasn’t harmed the environment and that it will last season after season. I still have styles in my wardrobe from the early days of Kettlewell (one of our vanilla Lace Camisoles from the first production springs to mind, as well as a couple of eight-year-old Silky Crew Necks which still look brand new). When a friend says, “Ooh, I love that top! Is it this season’s?” it’s not unusual for me to reply, “No, it’s six seasons ago!”

And judging by the lovely feedback we receive from our customers, it seems that you appreciate the quality too:

What I’ve learnt over the years is that helping our customers to be selective in their style and colour choices is key. We want them to choose items that work for them, so that every item they buy from us becomes a firm wardrobe favourite. That’s why we have the Colour Quiz, designed to be informative about the power of colour and direct customers to the colours that are most likely to work for them, and Colour Combination inspirations to help them mix and match those colours. It's also the reason we’ve launched a Style Quiz – a new guide to help customers find the Kettlewell styles that suit them best. After all, nobody wants to get it wrong and end up with a wardrobe of clothes that never see the light of day. I want everyone to find styles in their right colours and shine in them!

As someone who is new to Kettlewell I keep expecting the clothes to come out faded after first wash - but they don't! Love how Melissa took the time to teach us how to properly wash each item based on fabric as it really helps and works!

Loved reading about how you produce clothes and are committed to ethical fashion! It’s so lovely to see a company that is trying to protect the planet and treat its staff with fairness and respect. I just bought a skirt and a couple of long sleeve tops from you and absolutely love the colours and the soft fabric.

I would love it if you would restock the sold out camisoles as they sold out before I could buy them and I would really love a few in the bright spring colours!

I have shopped with you for many years and love the timeless and ageless quality to your garments as well as the quality of manufacture and, of course, the colours. I get frustrated by companies who sacrifice all this in the name of price. Most prefer to pay a little more for a better made garment and if you love something you want it to last.

I made my first Kettlewell purchases in 2012 having had my colour analysis (Spring) and today I am wearing an aqua cardigan I purchased then which still looks and feels like new, in fact the only items that have not withstood the test of time are the ones I inadvertently ruined! Please can I make a plea on behalf of us Sorings who enjoy being 'in the Pink'; can we have a selection of garnments, accessories, and footwear in Shocking Pink?

It's really great that more brands are paying attention to quality these days. I'm a new customer and really like the feel and good execution of the Silky tops, although the fabric is a bit on the thin side. That said, the stitching, seams and colours are perfect. The reason I'm commenting is because I got a request for a review, but I simply think it is too early to give a full review of clothing after only 1 week since I received them (shipping to Denmark took a week... Danish postal services are not the fastest). Why don't you send the automated email after e.g. 2 months? Then I will have washed the items once or twice, worn them a few times and it will be easier to say how they hold up to wear and washing. Do they stretch out at the elbows? Do the colors fade? Do threads come undone after only a few wears? Right now I can't tell, they're brand new, so of course they look amazing. That said I feel optimistic, because everything looks well made and they fit true to the size stated on the website (XS for me). So far I'm super happy I finally took the plunge after stalking your website for 3 years... :D

I am 80 years old and my season is Spring. I love the flattering comments I get when I wear a Kettlewell garment, which proves that Kettlewell is ageless!!

Hi, I was very heartened to read your comments on who you choose to produce your clothes, and and how they’re produced . I’m nearly 60 and grew up at a time where you kept clothes for several, if not many, years. I still do. I get so depressed about how we treat the planet and the clothing industry certainly has a part to play.

I’m on my way to meet my sister on the train to Manchester for an early birthday treat, I’m wearing a coat that I’ve had for 5 years as well as my gorgeous Kettlewell Spring blue leopard print round neck top, blue pencil skirt and blue velvet scarf!! As an occasional/ former image / colour consultant, I’ve been delighted to ‘find’ you!!

Keep up the good work!

Thank you,

Ruth x

It's true! Everything in Kettlewell lasts, and just as importantly, so does ones joy in the article as they are colourful, timeless pieces with material if good weight. Keep up the good work
